Starship Names

So I was wondering, how do you choose a starship name? Is their any specific set you like to choose from, or do you just get a random one? Personally, I try to find a fitting name for my ship from mythology. My current ship (the U.S.S Themis) is named after the greek patron god of hunters who stalk their prey (it's obscure, but it fits).

sometimes its rite off the top of my head. i have a KDF ship named Vermin. lol

Depending on the character I have themes i run with. With Pyriel I take names from Historical ships. Darion i'm going with Egyptian gods.

I just choose as I see fit and as the moment requires. though there are other factors which play into my choice of names.

usually I choose something that's relevant to the ship. My first one was the DarkFyre, the name of an rp character I have, since Stunshock was the captain (in the other rp, Stunny and DarkFyre are brothers, so it fit).


My Runabout is the Evanescence, as Amy Lee is my all time favourite singer so figured why not?

My main ship I use is the sovereign class Sentinel (registry C) named after the Sentinel B from the Star Trek Invasion game. The only problem is it has to have a 9 at the start of the registry, but other than that, it is the same.


My defiant class is named Viper, with the registry number being the dogtag number of Admiral Adama from the new version of battlestar galactica. With an X on either side.

Serenity is my favorite Name. My fiancé who passed away a while back she name was Serena, which also means serenity. So i have the serenity, and the serena marie. I have a ship named after phoenix, and one from her middle name Altair. I have firefly from the show. The harbinger since is my mirror uni ship and the harbingers meaning. The obsidian because black is my favorite colour. And Aria since that the name of the demon sword of wind. So all my ships have names with a double meaning, that mean something to me as well as something towards how i see star trek the rp etc. Serenity is peace since it was a prototype timeship meant to restore peace to the federation. Phoenix is a fiery ship with lots of phasers etc. Aria for the sky, Altair is a constellation. Well you get the point lol

All of my ships are named for cast members of Firefly. If I have a ship I'm not planning on keeping I will give the name of a U.S city.
If you really get stuck I find it helps to click through the random name generator and than I usually get a good idea for a name.

I was also wondering. does anyone else name their runabouts after famous rivers? (following tradition from DS9). Mine is the U.S.S Potomac

i dont even have a runabout o.O

USS Magpie because... well a) just because I called the Miranda-class I had at the outset USS Jackdaw (for no other reason than that it's small and flies and I'd seen a lot of them on holiday), b) because she picks up shiny things as she goes, c) because my dad's a Newcastle United fan. Take your pick.
Runabout is USS Columbus, for reasons that may become clear at a later date...

I like to use British warship names... for me they have a sense of dignity and pluckiness. I pulled them up on Wikipedia. I've used Thunderer, Illustrious, Dauntless, Maelstrom, Gyrefalcon and Renown thus far. Just my "cup of tea", not that I'm a Brit.

When coming up with a name I try to think of what I would actually name a ship or let the random generator spark my imagination.

Depends on the character for me sometimes I do themes with ship names. One of my toons I was doing Egyptian gods. But they are being used too much by other people so when this one hits Vice admiral I will name his oddi. The U.S.S Tuskegee after the Tuskegee Air men. I was doing a African American military theme with Pyriel till the Acheron.
