Gordon Lightfoot was born to Betazoid parents on planet Earth. His father was a member of the old water bound merchant marine, transporting short haul cargo using shipping routes that were not practical for the more expensive to run hover ships and flying ships. During Gordon’s first five years of life, his father decided that he wanted to secure a chance for a better life for his son, knowing that being a captain of water bound ships was a shrinking line of work. Only a few of the cargo routes were still in operation, and even the old style passenger liners were being phased out in favor of craft that were capable of traveling above the seas instead of plowing through them. J’ard Lightfoot had after all originally settled on Earth hoping that his son Gordon one day would be able to attend Star Fleet Academy and take to the skies, or even space aboard one of the great space faring ships. In order to guarantee his son would never have to worry about credits no matter what happened, J’ard took out a massive life insurance policy using his freighter as collateral. This act may have been brought about by prophetic premonition, because only two days later the Breen attacked Earth and both of Gordon’s parents were killed in the battle.
Although young, Gordon was quite aware of what had happened and who was responsible. As he grew in years, he dedicated himself to his father’s memory and applied himself diligently to his studies. When he was 14, Gordon sent in his Academy application, and at age 16 he was accepted to the Acadamy. After several years of hard work and study, Gordon graduated from the Acadamy with several degrees including a double PhD in astrophysics and probability mechanics with a rank of Ensign at the age of 26.
After his graduation, Gordon applied to flight school and proved to be adept at piloting both personal craft and large space vessels. He graduated from flight school with certifications to fly shuttlecraft, fighters and star cruisers with a hull displacement of 900,000 metric tons or less. He was assigned to various vessels over the next ten years, performing his duties well in general but never being promoted beyond his initial rank of Ensign due to multiple incidents of insubordination involving encounters with the Breen and other alien races associated with them. It was noted in his record that Ensign Lightfoot seemed to have an overriding desire for avenging his parents that tended to cloud his judgment and it would be highly risky to promote him to a rank of greater responsibility and latitude until he was able overcome his feelings in this regard.
In 2409, Ensign Gordon Lightfoot was at one of the tactical helms on the bridge of the Miranda Class Cruiser “Edmund Fitzgerald” when the Borg attacked. Ensign Lightfoot performed spectacularly during the attack and due to heavy casualties found himself the ranking officer on the ship. He managed to bring the ship out of battle intact and was given commendations and a promotion to Lieutenant by Star Fleet Command.
Lieutenant Commander Lightfoot currently commands a Fleet Escort christened “Edmund Fitzgerald” after the decommissioning of the original Miranda Class ship he had commanded.
