Re: Prior Service Members
Well, at least I'm not alone.
20 years Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician. Deployed to the sunny Persian Gulf a total of 4 times on aircraft carriers, and once on an amphibious assault ship. I also had 2 other Western Pacific deployments that thankfully didn't involve the world's oven as a summer vacation spot. I now have the perfect relationship with the military - I wake up every morning, and they pay me for being alive.

I was originally going to be an Avionics Tech, but the Navy kept saying join this program and you'll get more money, so that's how I ended up as a Reactor Operator ET on a Submarine. Gonna have to figure out Time Travel to stop my past self from doing that and going AT. I'd probably be a Senior Chief by nw oh well. Congrats on the retirement, I got 4 years left myself with the Reserves (two tours in Kuwait, including summer time on one )

I took the NFQT at MEPS way back when. Missed it by 3 points. The extra money would have been nice (especially those fat re-enlistment bonuses), but glowing in the dark would have interfered with my sleep, anyway. If I'd picked up Chief, I'd have probably stayed past 20, although given the likelihood of having to go "in country" for a tour these days, I'm not sure the Mrs. would have liked that idea a lot.

Former USMC 2611 here (CTR for you navy types) Never left the country but had many friends that did. Luckily never lost a friend out there.
