Marcus Quinn was born on Luna Colony, ca 2249. He qualified for early entry into Starfleet Academy at the age of 17, 6 months prior to his legally-required 18th birthday. At the age of 30, he earned the rank of Captain and received his first command: the Constitution class U.S.S. Excalibur, NCC 1664-A. The ship's overall service record was entirely positive if somewhat unremarkable, save for how it ended.
In 2282, while the Excalibur-A was en route to Vulcan as per Starfleet protocols (first officer Cmdr T'Mel of Vulcan requested leave for medical reasons), they received a distress signal from a Tholian vessel near the border of Tholian space. Captain Quinn opted to risk his ship and crew in order to lend aid to the alien craft and penetrated the border. What happened next has largely been considered to be an extremely unusual confluence of phenomena--"...a perfect storm," as Captain Data (U.S.S. Enterprise-E) commented. The Tholian vessel's warp core was in danger of breaching, so the surviving personnel (3 Tholian crewmembers) were transported aboard. Meanwhile, sensors were tracking a high-yield ion storm approaching fast. Before the ship could leave the area, Tholian space's most infamous characteristic displayed itself, and the Excalibur-A was stuck fast in an interphase, rendering the vessel incapable of generating a warp field. As it happened, the ion storm struck immediately prior to the interphase collapsing sufficiently for warp field formation--at the same time as the Tholian vessel's warp core going critical.
Starfleet recorded the vessel as Lost With All Hands.
In 2406, the Excalibur-A reappeared in virtually the exact same location it had occupied when it vanished. For the crew onboard, no time had passed. Their power cells were completely drained, and the antimatter in storage had been rendered inert. The derelict starship was detected by Tholian scouts and reported to the Federation; the typically reticent aliens were uncharacteristically forgiving of the ship's presence, granting the Federation 36 standard hours to retrieve it and remove it from their space.
Three years have passed since Captain Quinn's arrival in the 25th century. His senior staff has moved on; some went on to other assignments in Starfleet, while the majority left the service. Quinn spent some time in seclusion ("I figure I've built up some leave time by now," he was overheard to quip) before presenting himself to Starfleet Academy for re-education and to familiarize himself with the new technology and new sociopolitical climate of the Federation and the Alpha Quadrant in general. Once Starfleet was satisfied, Quinn was assigned command of a newly-refitted Miranda class starship, the U.S.S. Jackson. (His Chief Science Officer, Lt Cmdr Lisa Washington, has opted to join him as a member of his senior staff.)
