Jeff Baumer was a young buck just out of the academy when the Dominion Wars started. Fought on several starships during the war. Had to abandon ship once, was transfered a few more times. He eventually worked his way up the command chain and found himself first officer on one of the ships that were sent to retrieve the USS Prometheus from Romulan control.
Of course when Commander Baumer beamed aboard the bridge he was pretty befuddled to see two EMH programs standing in the middle and a bunch of knocked out Romulans everywhere.
Baumer, along with a few other men managed to figure out enough about the Prometheus's systems to get her back up and running and flew her home.
A number of years later, Baumer was asked by Starfleet to replace Admiral Thomas Ducors commander of the Prometheus Class starship USS Combination. The old man, on his deathbed told him many things about the ship. How she was actually very different from the original Prometheus Class. Baumer listened to many things that he had said, but understood very little of it. Baumer did manage to remember some of the codes that the old man had given him... although he never found what the command codes were for until recently.

After his command of the USS Combination, Baumer was transferred to Serenity Station to be an escort for rescue missions. Over the years, he moved up in the fleet and after Dr. Weaver's ship dissapeared during the Borg attack at the Battle of Serenity Station, Baumer was given command of the Firefly Fleet as Fleet Admiral with full title and rights.

- Apparently the USS Combination uses a combination of 6 deflector dishes. 2 per section, one front and one back on each section to help shape both the warp field and give a major electronic interference boost to incoming projectiles from the rear. Baumer didn't find this out until after Chief Kelley (a green horn from the academy) discovered the second deflector room in the main section hidden behind a panel in a jeffereys tube.
