Width: 550 meters
Height: 400 meters
Mass: 10,215,000 metric tons
Decks: 50
Crew: 8,500 officers and enlisted
Embarked Craft:
Shuttle Bays: 2
Fighter Launch Tubes: 100 (50 port, 50 starboard)
Runabouts: 10
Fighters: 800
Tactical Capabilities:
Defensive:
Shields: Regenerative Primary and Secondary Shielding, Ablative Hull Armor
Other: Redundancy Systems, all major system has at least one back up system that kicks in before the secondaries. Everything from life support to the main computer to the shield generators have a duplicate system that works at the same efficiency as the primary when engaged.
Offensive:
Phasers: 9 Phaser Arrays Type XII Arrays, 66 Pulse Phaser Turrets*
Torpedo Launchers: 20 (4 fore, 3 aft, 3 starboard, 3 port side, 9 weapons pod)
* Pulse Phaser Turrets
Warp:
Warp Cores: 3
Normal Cruising Speed: Warp 6
Max Cruising Speed: Warp 8 (12 hours sustained)
Maximum Speed: Warp 9
Notes: The years following the Dominion War the Federation started an increased instability in the Alpha Quadrant. The major powers all to busy rebuilding to police their borders leading to an increase in the boldness in the pirates and other criminal organizations of the areas. Coupled by the fact that the major powers still vying for dominance (this exemplified by the Battle of Bassen Rift with the Romulans and the Klingons increasing hostilities along the Romulan border) has led Star Fleet to look into new methods for upholding the peace.
Enter the Sol class. The second pure warship developed by Star Fleet, unlike the Defiant class whose role is strong, quick, run and gun tactics, the Sol's role is one of a deterrent. Its mere
presence in a system is designed to end conflicts before they start.
The secondary role of the Sol class is that of a mobile repair bay. Its retrieval bays are equipped with all of the standard repair technology of a dry dock and able to hold most civilian ships and smaller federation ships such as Defiant and Nova class ships. The Sol classes also have small craft(shuttles, fighters) production facilities to replace any lost in combat. The Sol are also equipped with an extensive medical center making them ideal for both post and in battle triage.
The Sol class isn't without its drawbacks though. The sheer power needed to operate and move a ship of this size is the reason behind the need for three warp cores. The loss of one would render the ship unable to maintain a warp field, a loss of two and the ships energy efficiency and output starts to drop significantly. Also the size is a limiting factor in terms of speed, while warp nine is possible it is not recommended under Star Fleet safety protocols due to simulations which project complete structural failure after passing the five minute mark while cruising. Simulations also show that should the weapons pod be destroyed, due to the high amount of munitions carried, the whole ship could be at risk of being lost.
Only wanting a method for deterrence and not a method for war only five ships of the Sol class have been constructed. Along with the Odin, there is the USS Zeus, Sol, Galactica, and Thor.
OCC Notes: I wanted I Galactica inspired ship but wanted to do slightly more than replace its standard engines with nacelles.
