Fun Fact: When Fox began to run Firefly they did not show episode 1 first, the first episode ever run was episode 2, "The train job".

Bit of a coincidence, Star Trek was the same! (Or something like that - I can't remember the exact order.) Found that out while trying to sort out which order the episodes on the remastered TOS DVD belonged in - for some weird reason they're in a completely different order in that edition!

Fun Fact: The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Killer Angels from author Michael Shaara was Joss Whedon’s inspiration for creating Firefly. It follows Union and Confederate soldiers during four days at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Whedon modeled the series and world on the Reconstruction Era, but set in the future.

Fun fact: The signature pistol of Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) is a Taurus Model 85 revolver completely covered by a brass casting which makes it look like an semi-auto handgun. The look of the weapon is based on the Volcanic repeaters used in the Civil War as explained by Firefly creator Joss Whedon in the visual companion. In the Firefly universe, the gun is a "Moses Brothers Self-Defense Engine Frontier Model B".
The same prop gun was used for the feature Serenity, but given to a new prop house who made the clip straight on the bottom, and bulked up the right side plate and added a spring loaded rear sight.

Fun fact: In this episode (Safe 2002) a 13-year-old Zac Efron made his acting debut he played Young Simon in a flashback.

Fun fact: American Astronaut Steven Ray Swanson is a big fan of Firefly, so when he was sent to the International Space Station for his first mission (STS-117) in 2007, he brought DVD copies of Firefly and its feature film Serenity aboard with him. The DVDs are now a permanent part of the space station’s library.


Firefly/Serenity in space!

Our Mrs Reynolds was the first episode of Firefly I saw. An online friend was watching it and sent me the link. Fell in love with it after that one episode and powered through the whole series from the start on youtube in the space of a week. And the film just happened to be airing on tv the weekend I finished.

Fun fact: Fireflies emit light mostly to attract mates, although they also communicate for other reasons as well, such as to defend territory and warn predators away. In some firefly species, only one sex lights up. In most, however, both sexes glow; often the male will fly, while females will wait in trees, shrubs and grasses to spot an attractive male. If she finds one, she'll signal it with a flash of her own.

Fun fact: A prop replica of the Winchester Model 1892 Mare's Leg rifle used on the short-lived The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. was also used on Firefly and Serenity as Zoe’s prop rifle. Whedon also reused a modified version of the sonic gun prop from the episode “Ariel” for Dr. Horrible’s death ray in Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog in 2008. Speaking of repurposing, that was also Simon Tam's lab coat that Neil Patrick Harris wore as Dr. Horrible.

Fun fact: The derelict ship in the episode Bushwhacked was originally a Power Rangers set.

Fun fact: The interior of Serenity was built entirely to scale; rooms and sections were completely contiguous. The ship’s interior was split into two stages, one for the upper deck and one for the lower. Whedon showed off the Firefly set in one long take to open the Serenity movie.

Fun fact: In out of gas Wash rigged up a red button so that Mal could call the shuttles back to Serenity. Alan Tudyk removed the button on the last day of filming and mailed it to Joss Whedon with a note that said, "When you get your miracle just hit this."
