    RP Protocols (Please Read!)

Post by Baumer on Sun May 03, 2009 11:46 am

    Role Playing Protocol:

Please read these before you RP. These protocols were on our old website, however, never made it here in these forums after we merged the site into this forum. Hopefully these protocols will help people avoid stepping on toes and give a little insight in how we RP around here.

    Baumer

    A. Serenity Station’s main purpose is fun and enjoyment for everyone. We are here to have fun, this is not a job. Please respect everyone else’s right to enjoy being here. Sometimes you have to give and take a little for everyone else to have fun too. Thanks!

    B. Please only run one Role Playing session at a time in the RP Central thread. If you have an idea and want to start one, put it in the RP Ideas thread and we will put that thread in order with the other upcoming RP Ideas. Most of the time it is first come first serve, however, that is also at the Command Staff’s discretion.

    C. If you are doing a smaller RP session with people not involved in any other RP sessions and have it approved by the Command Staff, then that is acceptable.

    D. If you are playing as yourself, do not play another person’s characters or ships. If the moderator or controller of the enemy force is not online, RP involving the enemy force should stop until that person returns or posts again.

    E. The RP Moderator of a RP thread is the leader of that thread. If the Moderator makes a decision you will follow it. The moderator in charge of the enemy is the only one authorized to assign damage to ships other than his/her own. The Moderator is also the only one allowed to assign damage and destroy enemy ships. The player is allowed to say that their weapon's fire hit, but not for how much. Also remember to keep things realistic. If things blow up too fast, its less fun for everyone else.

    F. If your ship is disabled by the moderator, you are disabled... you may repair over time, but repair just enough to get out of danger then come back at a later date. Remember, keep it real. The moderator, however, is not allowed to destroy your ship.

    G. DONT DESTROY THE SHIP OF ANOTHER MEMBER! If you attack another member's vessel, let them determine what damage was done to them. Likewise, make sure that if you are attacked that you are realistic in the damage assessment.

    H. If you have a decision to make, for example, whether or not you or another player win's a RP duel. I suggest flipping a coin or rolling a dice. A higher number on the roll wins the match... then all you have to do is make it fun and difficult and interesting!

    I. When playing in RP please try to be as canon as you can with the Star Trek series. If you are attacking an enemy, you won’t always destroy them in one volley. Please keep things interesting. Take damage and give damage, but give everyone a hit on the baddies. Make the scenarios last a while so it can be fun for everyone. Don’t be invincible. Take almost as much damage as you deal. This makes things more enjoyable for everyone. It is not a sin to have to retreat and come back after you have repaired damage. Also FOLLOW THE CHAIN OF COMMAND! Need I say more? Cool

    J. Ship designs should be within reason. Remember, we want to keep things realistic. When the game comes out, our designs will change to whatever ship we have in the game, however, for now please keep it real. No Omega weapons, or ships with 300 torpedo launchers, time travel devices, Photonic cannons, and so forth... if you aren’t sure if it is acceptable, feel free to ask me. This is just for the protection of the fun of everyone in the fleet. It also avoids ship jealousy incidents or confusing role play situations.

    K. A Senior Officer has the right to close or end any RP session at his/her discretion.

The original plot is still in the works, its just a matter of working out all the subplot details before we can return to it. There is no hurry to get to a resolution. That is part of the fun of RP. It happens over time when everyone has time to add their part. Sometimes subplots can run without everyone else getting involved. This helps keep things going while people are away, or until people get off work or back from vacation or such.

I have also noticed about 4-5 other plotlines still going on that have been going on since well before you joined us. I am looking foreward to seeing how they play out as well.

I have no problem with the way things are being run.

If you have a problem with the way things are running please discuss it in private messages to the moderator or myself so as not to cause problems in public areas.

Also, if the moderator makes a suggestion please don't take it personal. They are doing their jobs to keep things in check.

    Thanks.

Reanna, Pyriel & Myself have basically been the moderators for a while. Many times, I trust Reanna & Pyriel's instincts in RP, as they have been doing this for a very long time. They also have a knack for keeping track of not just their characters and storylines, but every storyline going on in the forum.

Ok, I see what you mean. Unlike some RP games like D&D and other RP where you have a central moderator that runs the whole storyline and tells people what happens to their characters after they make a choice, we have a little looser setup. Basically we are all moderators of our own character and add to the storyline bit by bit. We are all in charge of our own contribution to the story.

Most of our RP runs as a single storyline with all of us as the characters doing our various subplots and going about our daily "routine". Therefore, our RP actually tends to look much like a very long episode of ST.

These other subplots going on will eventually merge into the main plot again as they run their course. This is also why I only run 2 characters, because I can really only keep track of 2 and still remain sane.

As to what happens now, none of us know. Not even the creators of this storyline. We each have ideas of things that we are going to incorporate and twists that may come in somewhere down the road, but its ultimately up to us to choose when they happen.

Also as to the main storyline that started, with the cloaked ships attacking and whatnot? That storyline is still going on, its just in the background until the subplots begin to resolve themselves or something is brought into play that causes them to be cut short.

    Did that help at all?

Nah i was playing alot of foryum RPs, though those were centered around some general moderator, There was someone who was keeping iot all togetherand though we were inserting subplots, there was some limits. Now here. Story was based around repairing Kalashnikov. NOw during that pyriel was atacked by s31. Than it kind of went out of control ( not that is a bad thing itsefl) but it kind of lost in itself. SOme things that are happening are consequence of earlier happenings and individual character histopries, but geeraly i miss the one who controll it all:P I am afraid it will snowball somewhere we wont know. IT is nice in itself, butnow, as the protocol said \: moderator controls enemies. now with everyone having a subplot here ( maybe except of me...at least now.. i hawe no idea who is behind what

Ok. I see what you are saying as well. The Kalashnikov story kind of became a subplot after the attack on Pyriel's ship happened. That forum just kind of became the play area for the story that was happeneing. Upon review of this, what I should have done was create a new forum with a different name and left a message (Moving to "this forum" for the attack story.) so that everyone would have known. Maybe this is something that we can all help each other with in the future to avoid confusion.

The moderator with the Pyriel plot, as far as enemies go, is going to be Pyriel, or maybe Blackstar with Pyriel's permission. They tend to Private Message each other asking each other "if this would be alright with the other one" before they make an enemy do something. They also sometimes ask me to take command of a situation, as in RP I'm the commander of the fleet. That has definitely caused a few rubs in the past, but I'm getting better about it, haha.

It's an ever changing system. The baseline rules are basically there to keep toes from being stomped on. Sometimes things slip through the cracks and sometimes we come up with better ways of doing things, Like what we just talked about above (Creating a new forum when a new situation arises) I'm going to try and make that happen in the future, and I will try and get Blackstar and Pyriel to help me keep that happening so as to keep things a little clearer.

Yep! Wayyyy ahead of you on that one Baumie. Though I can keep track of multiple plot lines and characters, even I'm becoming a bit miffed. Not so much in anything save; where the heck is everything going as it pertains to who is speaking where?? hehe As a suggestion, I think when a new story starts, a forum is opened up specifically for it and if any subplots develop, those be placed within the current story forum. Once the game is released, this situation can be tightened up with a specific rp night where major plots take place. Sub plots can happen, but will have to be carefully engineered while out of rp night, so they can then, a session or two later, be incorporated back into rp night.

One of the biggest factors and problems, I see and can be easily dealt with, is reading everything that is going on. There are times where I'll have two windows open to this site; one for what I am posting and the other for information and such. There have been a few rare times where I've had 3 windows open to this site. Unfortuantely, its a pain in the butt. At a gaming table, everyone is there, all can see the gm and all can hear what is going on, but here, t'is different and extra efforts, though a pain sometimes, have to be made. It is not to say that i don't make errors along the way, which I do, but I do spend alot of time reading before I post...

Just my thoughts.. Very Happy Very Happy

I understand where your all coming from.

I have played and am plaing various diffent types of RPS.

    (1) Around a gaming table, wher everyone is there, and you can see the GM and can hear and what is going on such as the other players.

    (2) Text based RPG's where you have a charicter and you send in a written reply and the the gmae is modertatd by uselayy on moderator some times two or three as it depnds on the game and the players.

    (3) Forum based RP llike this that are post by post games with either one or more moderators it again depends on the RP itself
