Well today nasa succesfull tested first stage of Ares I ( and booster stage of Ares V). Which sterts their quest to revive saturn /apollo program and bring man back on moon. Interesting is that Ares is going for EOR ( Earth orbit Randevous) setup , contrary to apollo/satturn signle launch setup. also second stage of Ares I/V use modified J-2 engines same as saturn, not to mention that 1st stage of Ares V is modified Saturn V first stage with engines from Delta IV...

Now if they can get the parachutes to work (2 of the 3 chutes failed to opne) on the booster phase they may have something.

Re: Ares I-X
Well, going back to the single solid fuel booster will give them a few positives, but also a few negatives. Fuel cost will be significantly lower, as they will be employing only one larger solid rocket booster, vs 2 solids and a liquid tank.
But I still agree the tech is a step backwards.

Re: Ares I-X
Considering how complex the old Saturn-V's were, having a two rocket concept may seem simpler to NASA. Of course this is the same crowd that doesn't like to launch 50 ton rockets at above 20 kt windspeed, so this could backfire too.

Re: Ares I-X
Considering the early history of the Soyuz program, teh Soviets/Russians have done remarkably well with that platform. Something to be said for the Russian way of building things. They're bulky but they last better through tougher conditions. Germans know something about that too,

Re: Ares I-X
Those Germans they know how to make stuff! A buddy of mine had a 1976 volkswagon bug. This thing already was pushing 100000 miles when he bought it. That thing had gone through it all accidents, being underwater, long driving. When he and I enlisted in 1989 he left the vehicle in the care of his parents. He had bought a new vehicle and the bug was put into his parents vast backyard and forgotton. In 1999 I was visting him and we were having a BBQ at his folks house. While walking the property we came across the bug, tires rotted away and the earth was in the process of claiming the vehicle. He went and retrived the key climed in and after jumping the battery the bug started right up.qoona wrote:well saturn was almost 100% german technology, the brain of sasturn program was wehrner von braun himself <_<. good thing no saturn crashed, cos i have feeling if they did they would fall on london <_<
