How did you come to be a Brown Coat
As the topic says, how did you come to be a Brown Coat? I myself originally hated the idea of FireFly. I could not rationalize the old west feel to a scifi show. It reminded me too much of the old Show Earth 2. That is untill one day i caught a 15 minutes of the show by accident. Suddenly i was hooked, and now it stands as one of my favorite SciFi Series. How were you introduced?

I had heard of Joss through his other works. But had never heard of Firefly. One night as I was skimming through the channels I caught a movie in progress that movie was Serenity. As soon as the credits rolled I ran out and bought a copy and watched it again. I than took to the internet and discovered Firefly I ran out the next day and bought the complete series. After finishing the series I have yet to turn on the Fox network. If I am skimming channels Ill stop and press the number keys for the station after it.

I came to know firefly shortly after I joined the fleet. (When it was still Captain Baumer) I started looking at clips being posted in the forums and fell in love with alot of the fun firefly clips.
I then decided to watch the whole series and was hooked. Watched it in like a week and a half. Then I watched Serenity after that.
WHOOOOOOOO dogies! What a run. I am so sad that there was only one season. It's a crime that they cancled something so good.

It's how these things usually go down. They kill off Scifi series before they have time to find their audience.

The Movie Serenity got me
hooked. I saw the previews for firefly back in the day and was not impressed so
never saw it. Then the Movie Serenity came out and me having no idea it was the
same firefly Crew from the ad I saw years ago. After seeing the movie I was
like DAM I will get the DVD when this baby comes out. Then later I found it is
was from Firefly the show so I went right out to get the DVD and was Shocked it
was only one season. I was like WTH? Then I found out it was Fox that cancel
it. I'm like dam they need 2 do another movie then but never happen. I have now
seen the movie on DVD so many times I can act out the whole dam movie. And I
seen the whole 1 season on DVD about 8 times now. Of course I like river the
most.

Oh sweet! Usually when I ask anybody if they recall Space: Above and Beyond they look at me funny. I own the complete series, that was another great series cancelled by Fox. The WORST part about that is that they ended (what was to be) season one with a cliffhanger. Which unfortunatly became the way the series ended.

Re: How did you come to be a Brown Coat
Space was fantastic. i was all over that series. james remar was gold. earth 2 was a great idea at first. but i think NBC was still trying to retain the crowd they lost after they made seaquest go moronic. and, of course, during this whole time, SG-1 was playing on showtime.... now THAT one, was my fix.
Firefly, i watched. i went to germany, and then never heard of it again, til the movie. watched that, loved it, got pissed when they killed homeboy during the crash.
joss whedon is a gay efftard IMO. he ruined Buffy. angel was a punk. sorry folks... IMO..... IMO...

Re: How did you come to be a Brown Coat
Yes! It was a shame that Space; Above and Beyond was taken off air. Part of the reasoning I heard, was that it was wayyy too violent. Morons! What? War and the fight for survival is suppose to be about daisies and tree hugging? Space was hard hitting and real. They got to the meat of what war with a species trying to annihilate them is like.
But for me, it was Babylon 5. That series rocked in sooooo many ways. Once it ended, it was kinda like, "nothing will ever come along that grabs my interest as that series did." Nothing has! lol As for Angel. Once they got over the silly stuff and got serious with it, I started watching it. It was awesome. Buffy! Yeah, they wussed out with that series. Got way too mental and corny in the last season, thus the reason, around my home, we always refer to the show as, "Muffy, the Vampire Layer." lol
Earth2 was interesting. It had a lot of potential which was just never realized. Shows these days are never safe anymore. If they don't perform well within the ratings, they usually get axed. Not to mention all the whining and complaining that goes on over certain shows; racism, stereotyping of various types and so on. Like, give me a break. You don't like it, don't watch it. Sheesh!
And of course, there is Firefly. At first it didn't catch my interest, just giving it a passing glance. But when I finally did give it my full attention; I loved it. A western in space. Who would have thunk...hehe

See this is the exact thing that drives me nuts. Soo many great series that have huge and loyal fan bases, get chopped because of sad people in business suits. B5, Space, First couple seasons of Seaquest, Firefly, etc. So sad.

Re: How did you come to be a Brown Coat
Hum.. It took me a while to read through this to realize what you were asking about. I think i caught parts of the show on the SciFi channel while visit relatives, the first few times I was still trying to grasp the story and the characters, but got hooked on to wanting to know what happens next and so on and so forth.. Now I am back home with no access to the channel for it. Guess I have to look around for other ways to continue the series.
So what happen to Space 1999, or Lost N Space or Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. j/k

Re: How did you come to be a Brown Coat
I had seen ads for Firefly, but it aired when I was at work, so I never got to see it. Next thing I knew, *poof*. Didn't give it another thought for a few years, until a good friend of mine I met through SWG (pre-CU ftw!) asked me if I'd seen it. When I replied in the negative, she became borderline apoplectic and insisted I do so NAO!!! Next thing I knew, a package had arrived from me from CO by way of Amazon--containing the DVD set of the series. (This was before Serenity, btw.) Chagrined (and a smidgen startled), I sat down & fired up the first episode. I wasn't too sure during the pilot--let's face it, pilots almost always suck--but by the end of the 1st disc, I was hooked. Thank you Lorraine!
And need it be said: I cried like a baby at the funeral scene in Serenity. Wash was my /favorite/. My wife & I plan to kick off a Serenity tabletop RPG sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Re: How did you come to be a Brown Coat
I was out of the U.S. when Firefly aired, so when Serenity came out, I didn't even know it was based on a show. Around the third time watching it in the movie theatre, a friend asked me if I liked the Movie or the Show better...
Wait, WHAT!?!?!?! A show? Must have. Now.
Bought the DVDs, pretty much memorized every line, and now I'm here...
And sombedy wrote about Seaquest a bit farther up.. Now that was a good show!

Re: How did you come to be a Brown Coat
Oh, I didn't know this thread existed! The first time I saw Firefly, my dad was watching it on TV, and I thought it was another one of those stupid Science Fiction shows he always watched, but later on (in a few years) I saw an episode and absolutely loved it! Couldn't get enough, and to add to it, my brother bought the complete series *one season*, and watched every episode in rapid succession.
Another one of my favorites is SG-1 too Guile, it was really cool back on Showtime, and then they moved it to the Sci-fi channel, and then they made Atlantis, which I thought was a poor rip-off of the original, and now I come to find they are making a soap-freakin'-opera about it, kinda like they did with Galactica. Geez, down the drain... Oh, and I loved the Serenity movie and also Mystery Science Theater 3000. It was corny but fun.

A girl at work said I acted like Mal (I dunno if it was a compliment, but I took it as one), and she gave me a dvd to watch. I was hooked. My wife hates sci fi...though I forgive her for that every day, so it has become a guilty secret pleasure of mine.
