For those that may not have heard, there's a new Trek movie in the works that (hopefully) will become an online series. There's some big names from scifi attached to it so as long as the writing is good it has decent potential. Here's the link to their Kickstarter page. They hit their $200k goal today but they're hoping for $250k to improve sets, props, and uniforms. I was already excited when I saw Robert Picardo (The Doc - VOY), Richard Herd (Admiral Paris - VOY), and Ethan Phillips (Neelix - VOY) were secured, along with J.G. Hertzler (Chancellor Martok - DS9) playing the main antagonist, but seeing the update today that said Corin Nemec (Harold Lauder - The Stand, Jonas Quinn - SG1) joined on sealed it for me. He was no Daniel Jackson, but his acting has always seemed good IMHO.

I gotta say, recruiting a bunch of people from voyager doesn't really seem to be the path to success.

Re: Star Trek: Renegades
Gotta agree. And a series that picks up after Voyager doesn't sound very appealing, either. In my opinion they've long since lost sight of what Trek was, originally. That's what I'd like them to get back to. However this will probably be successful enough for an online series. Nice to see some of these folks lending themselves to a Trek project.

Re: Star Trek: Renegades
DS9 is actually my favorite. Well... DS9 starting in season 3. Basically once Sisko shaves his head and grows the goatee it's good times, before that it's pretty meh.
The problem most of the other series runs into isn't really a star trek problem, it's more a sci-fi problem. The thing is: Sci-fi is only really good if it's actually something else playing dress-up in sci-fi clothes. They knew that with the original series, that's why they modeled it as a western. Firefly did the same.
But when you forget this fundamental rule... Well, that's when you get things like exploring gaseous phenomenons, or trying to communicate with some new lifeform that happens to be a blue crystal, or something equally as daft. I'm not nearly a big enough nerd to find that kind of thing entertaining.

Re: Star Trek: Renegades
With the original series many of the scripts were adapted from short stories written by published Sci Fi authors. As the series progressed (thru Next Gen, DS9, etc) as well as the movies they increasingly got away from that and the scripts, more and more, were written written by Hollywood Mill writers and based on ideas by people who make movies for a living. However the best entertainment, IMO, is still to be found in taking a story that was well written enough that it can entertain in written form and then transforming it to the screen (big or small). The main thing I've found missing more and more, though, is the feeling of optimism about the future. ST:TOS painted a future I couldn't wait to get to... by the time of the last Next Gen movies and Voyager the picture they painted was of a future I wouldn't visit if you paid me to...

Re: Star Trek: Renegades
Yes TOS's vision of the future is rather sweet, I always enjoy coming back to it after reading one too many dystopian nightmares... although it's slightly unnerving, not in itself but because it's so clearly a magnified version of what the American government think they are like, and ain't!
