Re: Ask Cryptic: The October Edition
Q: (psyloaf) A while ago we heard talk of the playable First Officer system giving Captain powers to First Officers. Furthermore, there was talk of making Bridge Officers department heads that would provide bonuses. Are there any new updates on this front?
Dstahl: As a player achieves the rank of Admiral, we would like the player to take on the responsibilities of developing and managing the ships under their command. There are several features that will be developed to represent this in game. One of those features is the ability to have your First Officer occupy a special, additional station on your bridge. We also anticipate Admirals being able to assign crew to ships in their command that can either assist the Admiral in space, or attempt their own special assignments. Look for these features when we get closer to increasing the skillpoint cap to Admiral.
This one had me really excited!

Agreed, Section Leader! I predict that will be one of the biggest and most popular new additions to the game!

Re: Ask Cryptic: The October Edition
Q: (zeuxidemus001) Any chance we will get the account bound STF tech drops?
Dstahl: The entire reward structure of the STFs is being revamped in Season 7 and being converted into the new Omega Fleet Reputation system. There will be an upcoming blog post that will explain the conversion that will be happening and how previous dropped items are being incorporated into the new personal advancement system. As such, the function of these items will be changing slightly and we do not intend to make them account bound, since they will directly be tied into personal advancement for the Captain who plays the STF. Check the website for more information about these changes as we get closer to Season 7.
So all our EDC's and the like are going to be converted to some new system, for better or worse?

EDC isn't energy credits, that's EC. What's EDC?
The Admiral thing is interesting. I might take a while before I start on that though, I quite like the idea of being one captain with one ship and one crew.

Seems pretty useless in its current form. I mean, I can't imagine ever being somewhere and like having a burning need to see what accolades I have and firing up my phone to check.
I heard someone mention that doff-management via web browser was something in the works, though. That'd be pretty convenient. Assuming there's some mechanism to check other sectors. If you're limited to wherever you logged off at then that wouldn't be all that useful either.

So, yeah, we're getting screwed. If you have your set(s) praise god. If you don't, work your butt off to get them before season seven hits.
The short version is, all your current STF items (EDC, salvage, tech) are converting to a new currency, omega marks. And now, getting your sets requires these omega marks (which come in normal and elite varieties)... AND DILITHIUM.
A bit more explanation:
A full set of Mk XII Gear costs 3000 Marks, 15 Elite Marks, and ~100,000 Dilithium.
Attaining Tier 5 in Omega Rep costs 1,686 Marks, 0 Elite Marks, and ~80,000 Dilithium.
Currently (it's not on holodeck yet, so subject to change), an elite STF awards 60 marks and 1 elite mark. 1 set piece is 36k dil, so the approximately 100k listed above is actually 108k. So, you'd have to do 50 elite STF's to earn the 3k marks, which will also give you the 15 necessary elite marks. And then you have to blow two weeks worth of dil.
And that's if you don't need tier 5 omega rep to buy the gear, I don't know how the reputation thing works works.
Some other things to keep in mind with this:
The refine cap isn't being raised, so you're limited to 8k dil/day.
Starbase projects still require massive dil input
Most of us will still want/need dil for zen-store purchases
Oh, and the borg console? If you haven't heard, it's being removed from the retro borg set. The retro borg set will now be 3-pieces, so you won't be able to get the shield regen without using the borg shields. The borg console is becoming part of a new set.
Also, there's some changes coming to the doff system, for the worse. From what I've read, it looks like they're removing the academy based free-doff missions. I don't know if it's some of them or all of them. The cost to trade in your doffs for higher quality ones is also raising, substantially:
5 common to 1 green - going from 10 dilth currently to 500 dilth
5 green to 1 blue - 50 current to 2500!!
5 blue to 1 purple 250 current to 5000!!
I don't know about the rest of you, but I do a lot of trade-ins with my doffs. But it's not going to be worth it if they jack up the price 50x. The lack of academy doff missions is going to hurt us in another way; a ton of starbase projects require doffs. The exchange price of the doffs needed for starbase projects is going to skyrocket.
I suggest you look things over on tribble if you can, and leave feedback on the forums and such. Chances are it won't make a difference, but maybe if enough people voice their concerns they'll listen.

Re: Ask Cryptic: The October Edition
Yeah, I've been seeing a LOT of smoke already on the STO Forums about these changes. However enough complaints can make a difference. Ultimately this is a business and any decision made that looks like it will run off the customers will be changed, eventually. I've seen them reverse or modify decisions before and I suspect this is one that will get, at the least, modified fairly quickly because, as you noted, this will have a serious negative impact on Starbase building.
However part of this may be intentional. They may be panicking a bit because the Starbases were meant to take (if I recall correctly) a bare minimum of 6 months to get to Tier 5 and there are some who are already almost there. That's silly on their part because no matter how you design something there's always going to be the very few who ace it in half the time at twice the expected performance level. Most of us are well on track as expected and this will put everyone SERIOUSLY behind... so let's ALL get on the STO Forums and make our displeasure heard. They either need to remove the Dil requiremtent or DRASTICALLY increase the amount of Dil one can earn and the amount one can refine (in fact I think the refinement limit needs to go altogether).

Posted. Really cross about this because I'm keen on DOff missions and as someone who doesn't play (what I think of as) silly amounts of time, I absolutely cannot raise that much Dilithium, not if I ever want any left for anything else! So, we can't recruit doffs regularly at the acadamy, have to pay huge sums of dilithium to turn white doffs that are going to be near impossible to obtain into green doffs, and won't be able to complete starbase building missions because no one will be able to obtain the needed doffs. Re: Ask Cryptic: The October Edition
I'm not positive, but I think the academy doff missions are supposed to continue, but they'll cost dil to start. Basically the push is for you to pay for them, either with dil or with zen by getting the c-store doff packs.
Starbases will cost more because you'll not only have to spend dil on the projects themselves, but you'll have to spend dil on the doffs, or or else spend dil on zen for doffs. Or spend EC's for doffs or doff packs off the exchange (which someone else spent dil/zen on).
Plus you'll need Dil for your sets, and dil for your your items, and dil for your reputation (both romulan and borg).

Suits me... I was always VERY uncomfortable with the idea of the future being some sort of Communist paradise. I'm a free market Capitalist down to my toenails (no, really... I bought 'em at Marks & Spencers... they were on special offer )
Although "VERY uncomfortable" isn't really quite accurate... more like screaming, venom spitting, throw things at the TV outraged... that'd be closer to the truth

I agree, the only thing the vast majority of humans would evolve into in a Star Trek style universe is hedonists who spend all their time in the holodeck if they couldn't fulfill all their pleasures outside the holodeck, leaving a few hard working individuals to try to hold things togegether.

I think thats probably the most acurate of a "Star Trek" style future. People would have to be forced to work by some type of lottery system or election system.
But what is supposed to have happend is after the nuclear horror, all the worlds governments had pretty much disolved. There really was no one left that remeber how to run things the way they used to be. And after the Vulcans came to visit, this is when people began to come together to work for the greater good.

Oh THAT explains it... The vulcans are actually behind all of it, kind of like the Free Masons or the Illuminati, and they just tell us what we are doing is for our own good... It all makes sense now.
