It's legit. Certainly the ideas and theories aren't that new. Physicists have, for some time, theorized on the possibility of exceeding the light speed barrier by actually moving space itself (hence the reference in the last Star Trek movie when Scotty say, "It never occurred to me to think of space as the thing that's moving".) However they now have the math to back up the theories and are entering the "search for real evidence" stage. That's a development that many didn't expect for as much as another century... if ever. If they can find actual evidence of the existence of such "warp bubbles" that would be a GIANT leap forward.
