Since extra ships were being deployed anyway owing to Borg trouble, Starfleet responded by putting the delighted Ensign in charge of J-class starship Jackdaw, and sending her away to gather data in Delta Volanis - her orders were basically to go away and make herself useful, and she has.

Over the next few months four other officers joined Jackdaw for various reasons, and Hare handled this with unexpected success. When, not long afterwards, there was a difficulty finding crews for a batch of new science vessels, Hare was assigned as Commanding Officer of USS Magpie accompanied by the four from Jackdaw. (Some of whom are consequently filling positions they would not normally have for years, but situation is being overlooked as long as it continues to work.)

Hare wants to believe that Starfleet can one day return to the days of peaceful exploration. Magpie's class is not generally assigned to frontline combat, and Hare has a bit of a reputation for finding ways to sort out a situation without fighting - though sometimes rather extraordinary ways.

Admires the Vulcans; apparently on her first posting she served under a Vulcan C.S.O., who she declares taught her all she knows. Either it was purely theoretical knowledge or we have rather different ideas of logic.
Interested in ancient mythology and superstitions - "and if you did my job you'd believe in ghosts too".
Her tendency to take in strays will have to be watched, although she will never admit to any problems with any of the inhabitants of Magpie - in fact she does not admit anything much at all about some of them.

Ah, yes, promotion through irritation of your superiors. I excel at that.

Mirra Ylzanov.
Andorian, female. 22.
Lieutenant. Chief Tactical Officer.
I first met Mirra at the siege of the Khitomer. She was in what remained of the sickbay, shouting for her phaser back - after an amazing fight, so I'm told; I was trying to explain to some random officer that I'd never flown Jackdaw in combat before. On hearing that, Mirra promptly volunteered to come and help, to my relief and the EMH's disgust - and boy did she ever fly that day. And that's Mirra in a nutshell. Leg got better but she never ended up leaving.

Hot-headed but capable. Loyal in slightly pitying way. Proudly military, red-hot on Starfleet directives and discipline. Just as well somebody is.

Jhril Phihl.
Andorian, male, 23.
Lieutenant. Chief Engineer.
When we finally made it back to Earth Spacedock afterwards, I was told that one Ensign Phihl had requested to transfer to Jackdaw. I couldn't make out how he'd even heard of Jackdaw. Mystery eventually solved when it came out that he and Mirra were engaged.

Bit of a knight in shining armour, this one, charging off to save the world and especially Mirra. (As if she wasn't as likely to have to save him). Reminds me a bit of my old captain. Speciality is force fields - Magpie's shield is his pride and joy and mine too for that matter.

Isry Sereni Sain.
Trill, female, 30.
Lieutenant. First Officer/Chief Science Officer.
I think Isry may have initially been assigned to Jackdaw to keep an eye on us three; but she's all I could have wished for. Our work, in turn, suits her down to the ground - one of the few ships in this rotten century still able to spend less time fighting than visiting strange new worlds and, most important to Isry, strange new people.

One of the more domesticated members of our crew, with all the charm you might expect from a diplomat's daughter. She's the one I'd always send to meet and greet a difficult Romulan (read: a Romulan). Not just an undeniably pretty face, though - can track down a ship by day-old plasma traces and, peace-loving as she is, when she does end up in a fight she can do the most unnerving things.

Dr. Alisa Evelin Laurente.
Human female.
Ensign. Chief Medical Officer.
Was eventually discharged from her first posting, the captain not approving of some of her methods. (Well - his actual expression was "flaming witch-doctor".) I say that captain threw away a good thing.

Ensign Mirik. Vulcan, female, 22.
Security Officer.
Mirik apparently failed her finals for the Vulcan fleet on grounds of emotional instability. I can't say I'd have noticed. She contrived to try again at San Francisco, passed with excellent marks and, being a bit hard to classify, got sent to me. I thought I was getting a bargain, not realising that the Andorian War was going to break out all over my tactical department. I've tried to explain to Mirra that she doesn't mean anything by it; Mirra is still calling it dumb insolence. And I suspect Mirik is reacting by trying even harder.

Crewman Evans, Human, male, 20.
Communications Officer.
Came up from Jackdaw. Youngest member of crew, not counting tribbles and so forth. Good lad, keen to learn. Has come on a lot.

A huge old specimen, nearly as big as a cat. Shouldn't be up here. No, don't you twitter at me, it won't wash. I never knew such a tribble for getting out.

just redone Ellen's bio. Got a bit carried away there, didn't expect it to turn out so long! Will have a go at the crew ones soon, I've changed my mind about a few of them and I like the way sirvanyev did his.

I've redone the crew bios now. Can never leave well alone!
