Firefly Fleet Rank Descriptions

Fleet Admiral

The Fleet Admiral is the leader of the fleet.  In most cases the ultimate decisions are in the hands of this office, however, many times the FA will defer decisions to the "Council of Admirals"  which is made up of all of the admiral ranks in the fleet. Many discussions about big fleet decisions will be held, so as to avoid making any bad decisions on a whim.  *Note: (My policy is to not ask anything of my lower members that I wouldn't be willing to do myself.  I expect the same from the rest of my Admirals.)

Admiral

The Admiral's are each in charge of a squadron within the fleet.   These squadrons don't necessarily mean that these are the only people that you can play with, nor is any squadron higher ranking or better than another.  If it's a big decision that will affect the squadron, the buck pretty much stops here.

Vice Admiral

The Vice Admiral is the #2 guy in a squadron.  As with the Admiral, when this rank is the highest ranking officer, this officer has the choice to take command, however, he can always defer to one of the captains if they are more experienced.

Rear Admiral

The Rear Admiral is the first Admiral rank that you will achieve in the structure.  Other than being slightly lower in rank to the Vice Admiral, the perks and duties are pretty much the same.

Removal of the Commodore Rank

In our fleet we removed the Commodore rank for a few reasons.  For one, it's sort of like being 20… you aren't a teenager anymore, but you still don't have all of the perks of being an adult.    We basically removed this position so as to make things simpler.  It may change someday, but... don't count on it happening any time soon.

Flag Captain

The Flag Captain is the default command Captain in a squadron. In other words, this Captain is the default leader among the other Captains in a squadron.  This captain is expected to be a person of good character and competency.   This position will usually be someone with sound tactical knowledge and well balanced leadership qualities.

Captain

The Captain's in our fleet are expected to be officers of great character and competency.   Those who aspire to be a Captain are people who are willing to do whatever they can to help fellow members in the fleet, no matter how high or low in level or rank.  These members are the workhorses of the fleet.  In other words, it's not all glamour... there is some responsibility to the job.

Commander

The Commanders in the fleet are players that are experienced in the game and people of good character and competence.  To be promoted to this position, you are expected to display qualities of activity, good ethics, high moral standards, as well as a desire to help and donate time and effort to the betterment of the Fleet.

Lieutenant Commander

The Lieutenant Commander rank is achieved through promotions based on Merit, Activity, Good moral ethics, as well as a desire to help and donate time and efforts to the betterment of the fleet.  These members have been members of the fleet for a while and have shown an interest and ability to be team players and will most likely move up in the fleet with further time, activity and good morals.

Lieutenant

The Lieutenant is the backbone of the fleet. These members have been a part of the fleet for over 90 days with good conduct and good standing with the fleet.   There will always be many more Lieutenants than there are higher officers in the fleet, mainly due to the fact that… well, not everyone can be a captain or an admiral in the fleet structure.  Never fear though, you will never be looked down upon because you are a Lieutenant.  You ARE important to our fleet because the Lieutenant rank is our fleet's basic member status.  "An Admiral wouldn't know how to screw in a light bulb, let alone steer the ship without a Lieutenant around to make sure it gets done."

Lieutenant JG

The Lieutenant Junior Grade is a member who has been with the fleet 60 days with good conduct and good standing.   These members are to be respected, for they will soon become part of the core membership of the fleet!

Ensign

The Ensign group is made up of members who have been with the fleet for 2 weeks with good standing and good ethical conduct.

Cadet

The Cadet's in our fleet are our new members!  Please everyone give a warm welcome to our Cadet members.  These people are the future of our fleet, so treat them well and help them however you can, within reason, if you are able.

Risa

To people who have had to go on leave from the fleet due to RL (Real Life) issues, please let us know that you are going to be gone in our forums.  We understand that things happen and that RL is ALWAYS more important.   Try to let us know when you are going to be away and expect to be back and we will always try to hold your position for you for as long as possible.  However, if you just disappear without any word to where you have gone, eventually we will have to replace you and put you on the Risa list.   Look at the fleet protocol page for LOA (leave of absence) and the Risa list for more info.
