Got a brainstorming project!

ok, so my life's ambition is to head the ocean colonies project. It's mobile, half submerged, and has a space launch platform. As well, it has a school, music hall, science labs, and quarters for everyone. It needs to be able to hold up at high seas (such as a tropical storm), be self sufficient, and bio-friendly.

Needing of help and brainstorming stuffs! lolz would be much appreciated.

Landing platform for helicopters. Make an over-the-water platform with an elevator that goes underwater to the Bio-Sphere thingies. That's how people can arrive and leave. It would be kind of like an oil rig platform.

Well I think some of the complex should be on the surface of the sea, along with another part built on the sea bed

Sould sink some wrecks nearby to create artifical reefs. Thereby attracting much aquatic life and making sure you have a healthy food source.

I recommend installing a system that allows you to sink your platform (like a submarine) in the event of a heavy storm. It doesn't have to go all the way down, just far enough to not get tossed by wind.

The Platform has to already be airtight enough to survive space flight and it's definitely going to be water tight already and have life support systems.

Well, it's not going to space, it's just there to launch/retrieve space craft. But yes, air tight and life support are a must.

Love the idea with the having it in two sections, and the artificial reef, but that may or may not be needed because of the fact that I'm already working on seeing what I can do about making this in the south pacific. It'd be a major port of harbor for many ships (cuz they is lots of islands down theres).

Communications is also a must. But what about power?

Geothermal energy? Perhaps a solar panel or two on the platform?

Ah power is easy! your power is everywhere! Salt, Sunlight and flowing water. All of which can be used by themselves to create power. Or be used together to create power.

oh yeah! good point. Thank you both very much. And solar (seeing as how it's south pacific) can be collected and used for emergencies.

What about basic design? I'm beginning to get the feeling that it'd almost be like an iceberg as far as structure goes. But we still want it to look cool. I mean, if this is an entire colony, you want awesome views and interesting architecture, and at the same time, have it be functional.

Also, we have to take into account the fact that we need ports/docking areas for both surface ships and subaquatics.

(Here is a possible design idea for you. Just had some time and got creative )

The biggest key to this design is "Flexability" For power, you can use nuclear power below decks, you can incorporate solar pannels on top and on the sides of the crew quarters. You can even drop a tap and use geo-thermal energy if you are in an area that supports that and isn't too deep below you.

The deck can be shifted and changed around as needed. Buildings can be added and removed as needed and the entire platform can be submerged using a balast system (Like a submarine) if needed to avoid a tropical storm.



A: Ocean

B:Railing -Can also be tied off to craft. Openings can be made and pannels removed from the deck for docks.

C: Various buildings, research labs, construction zones and storage areas can be added on the deck as needed.

D: Internal crew housing. This area rises up two stories from the deck of the platform into the air.

E: Internal deck, for submarine vehicle launch. Also can remove pannels to help dock vehicles. There is room for various cranes and machinery in here to facilitate vehicle launch.

F: Above the inner portion is a re-enforced Glass Dome that can move with the Internal crew housing as one unit to seal off the internal areas into an air tight compartment if so desired. This action will most likely be used if the Sea Platform is to be submerged.

G: From line to line is a landing strip long enough for a space shuttle or large aircraft to land and take off.

H: Helicopter pads

I: The Main Deck. This is a multi-purpose area that can be built on and taken apart as needed to dock various ships or store various supplies. The completely round design is an attempt to help prevent the dock from lifting or pitching if the platform takes a large wave.

J: This area is an internal lift and constructable launch pad area for space launch vehicles. This lift also allows easy access to various parts of the launch vehicle. Launch elevator should be extended just above the dome before launch is attempted, so as to avoid scourching craft within the launch bay.

I've seen a similar platform that is actually in use, some private rocket launching platform, they used it in the Pacific, the could flood have the vessel to lower half into the water to stabilize the top half. I would think for longer use and nuclear sub thats modified would help for power issues or look into the Dutch new Wave power generator systems. Sea Launching Facilities

I didn't like atlantis as much as the original. I felt it was just a knock-off.. sigh

yeah, but that's the same basic idea. And Sealab sounds kinda corny. lol

was thinking though, that we have the major section of the structure be underground, with the mobile platform and launchpad that can "dock" with the sublevel

Hey, any ideas for anything sublevel. I mean thank you for the basic top level Baumer, totally rocks. But what if one of two things:

A: this thing is built kinda like an iceberg where the main structure is underwater

or

2: What about having a secondary unit that the main surface unit could dock to.


This still a reasearch facility, not to mention an entire community and stuff. There'll be whole families and kids and things living here. (which is part of the reason why i like the flexible design).

And another thing... about how many people do you think we'd be able to fit on here if it's gonna be a colony?

DUDE! just watched this totally awesome show about future cities. Included some stuff about skyscrapers that are more horizontal than virtical, and all sorts of power stuffs that will explain later, but the cool part was this guy who has discovered a way to make concrete slabs float by filling it with this foam! XD

He's working on an entire project to create floating cities. Can anyone say, "home base!"
