What races will be playable in the beginning, and what races will be added as playable in the future?

I mean, I know Klingons will be there, and Feds, but what about Borg, Romulan, and Cardassian? I mean, soooo many races with different ships to themselves. I know there will be made-up races, but they will be under certain faction's ships, I'm talking about different factions with their own ship-types.

As far as I know the races will go something like this:

Federation
Human
Vulcan
Bajoran
Andorian
Ferengi
Tellerite (?, may have been PE only)

Klingon
Klingon
Gorn
Orion
Nausican

Custom (i.e made with the species creator and there for not an official part of a faction)
Romulan
Cardassian
Vorta
Changeling
And also any of the official races but in the opposite faction (ex Klingon in the Federation)

I may have left out some.

Oh woops just noticed your second post. At launch it will be Federation and Klingon factions only, though it is possible the Klingon faction will contain ships from their new allies.

The Borg in the STO game are a non playible race in the game and will be as a result attacking everyone

Sweet, do you think they'll add new factions in expansions, or as the game progresses? Playable factions, that is. I mean, it would be kind of awkward to be playing for a year and then have them drop in several new factions you can play as... I'm not sure how that would work out.

Well Cryptic is pretty good about adding content. As to if they are going to be adding, they have said that we can expect more factions down the line. But to as which ones who knows. Its a very real possibility that the entire first year of the game could go by without any new factions being brought in. But that why people play MMOs, just when you think you have the game nailed down. BAM! They drop in new content and the whole game changes.

That's cool, I hope they do a good job though, adding new factions could turn out ugly if they don't do it right, but I'm sure they'll do fine. They might pull a WoW and make your level of experience jump waaay up when you first start playing later on down the line, that way, people can be Romulan, Cardassian, or whatever race they feel like, without getting completely dominated by other, longer standing races.

At the Las Vegas convention when asked about future expansions Romulans and Dominion were mentioned.

I personally can't wait for the day the Dominion expansion. They're the only faction I can think of playing for the big ships.

Klingon, Bird of Prey = happy (though I am curious about the carriers)
Romulan/Cardassians = pansies so who cares

I would like to play the Dominion as well. That would be one of the few other races I would be excited about playing.

I've read on the STO forums that Cryptic would allow players to move their characters over to a new Faction with little to non penalty, and have like a moment to revisit the tailor to re-customize their toon to fit into the new faction; but even with that, people are concern about what happens to your ships and other resources, and what impact that would have on fleets and the other existing factions if all bail for the new faction.

With new transfers to different races, people would really have nothing to lose if they just made a living in the game giving intelligence to other playable races, i.e. having two characters, one Fed and one Klingon and having the Fed spy for the Klingons, or even switching back and forth often enough to find weak spots. I'm sure Cryptic will figure something out though, they've got a couple of franchises under their belt.

Dominion? hmm, that would be an interesting race to join... Also, what's wrong with the Romulans? They've got cloaking and they have the Raptor, which I think is one of their best ships, quick, well-armed and quiet.

I'm just saying that the Romulans don't have COMPLETELY useless ships. Plus, there are an estimated twenty-five ships anyway. The idea that more than a few players could get such a ship in STO is ridiculous. I mean, twenty-five of those could probably take out a good portion of the Romulan empire, if not destroy it completely. Having every Jem'Hadar Captain with the capacity to use such a ship would completely unbalance the power in the galaxy. Unless some tactical cubes came by...

I'd actually be extremely happy settling for a bug ship.

Hmm, how tall are normal Jem'Hadar personnel anyway? Like, seven or eight feet tall?

all i know for a fact is there already planning an expansion and in that the romulans will bacome a real race and faction. so itll be a tri fight like in planetside
