As an amateur astrologer, I spotted a strange pattern in one particular Star Trek race quite a while ago.
The sign of Scorpio is associated with:
- stormy emotion
- incredible loyalty/endurance/pig-headedness
- secrecy, spies and detectives
- poison
Kin ya see what it is yet?
Also, in old-fashioned astrology the other symbol of Scorpio (besides the Scorpion) was the Eagle. Given the whole Roman thing, I think we all know what particular "raptor" the Star Trek writers had in mind.
I'm wondering whether there was just an outstandingly weird planetary conjunction the day "Balance of Terror" came out, or whether somebody deliberately based the species on Scorpio. It would be a very good short cut for designing an alien race.
