As far as I can tell, if one were to do this "free", it would require endless FM grinding (not a problem before, now... it is more so) for the FC, that would give, say the Oddy class. Anything beyond that would be Module based or Zen based. This would require dilithium conversion, requiring endless dilithium grinding. It is the way it was before, but it seems these ships and anything beyond the Ad,LH level free ship is going to become much harder to obtain. Luckily, I still have my token, and bought a Mirror Star Cruiser from the Exchange.
My opportunity to upgrade this will be a long time coming.
I tend to think that most non-lockbox ships are reasonably priced. You get a perfectly adequate ship at level 40 free, and while it's not top of the line it'll serve you. Then you can get all the mirror ships dirt cheap off the exchange. They've been in enough lockboxes that there's a fair variety of them, and you can find one to match most any play-style.
"Fleet" Fleet ships: 20k ec, 4 fleet modules, usually. The 20k EC isn't a whole lot, no matter how you look at it. 4 fleet modules is a bit pricy, 2k zen if you buy them from the fleet store. But "only" 20m EC if you buy them off the exchange. Tour the universe can give you over a million for an hour, a farming foundry mission caps out at around 800k. You should be able to save up enough for the fleet modules in about a month if you play an hour a day. That's grindy, but not excessively so.
Non-"Fleet" fleet ships, the 200k ones, are potentially worse with this change, most of the fleet events really don't provide that many marks. But even without marks, you can get 200k FC with 200k dil, which is less than a month at 8k/day, assuming no other contribution except dil.
c-store ships, playing for free, are pretty similar. If you hit your dil cap daily, it should take about a month to get a single 2500 zen ship using only one character at current exchange prices.
In the grand scheme of grinding, a month for a top of the line ship doesn't seem unreasonable. The overly-expensive offerings are lockbox ships, which run 60-80m on the exchange or an average of 200+ million statistically if you open boxes yourself.
I find the rep system crap far more grindy.
