I'm thinking of going for the fleet Excelsior. I've got the free akira just sitting there doing nothing, since I never was interested in the ship (didn't even play it when I got it. I just stuck with my connie all the way through to the galaxy). So I was just wondering if anyone has the Excelsior (Obviously not fleet, since the shipyards wont be built for another 3 days), what are your opinions on it?

Both my Fed persona's (1 Tac, 1 Eng) have an Excel. It's my favorite cruiser! Now, bear in mind, I am, by nature, a renaissance kinda guy... you know, jack-of-all-trades, Master of none. What I like about the Excel is it has ample firepower, good hull points, good shields yet is more nimble and quick than any other cruiser (especially with an RCS console). It also has the ability to transwarp anywhere in the game. Other ships can only do that via the use of a consumable. The transwarp console that comes with the Excel not only reduces the cooldown on transwarp but also buffs shields and energy levels a bit. And I just like the look of it. I always run with the Excel refit saucer rather than the retrofit saucer because, to me, those two extra outboard impulse decks just look like overkill... but to each their own. It's my favorite Fed cruiser (could use a bit better BoFF layout, though).

i don't think a fleet one will come with consoles, but it should be able to use them.

I really like mine, has good turn for a cruiser and lt. commander tac is nice for torp spread 3 or beam overload 3. I'll probably upgrade to the fleet version.

Stat-wise it looks pretty good. Not too terrible turn rate, for tac consoles. The boff layout is pretty meh. Way too engineering heavy. The lt. or ensign engineering boff should be something else.
Other than that, doesn't look bad if you really want to fly a cruiser. Which, well, I wouldn't. But I admit freely I'm very much biased.
