He did it 30,000 feet lower than Felix, and never broke the sound barrier. But still proved that an astronaut could bail out of a doomed rocket.

While Felix was doing this to break records the powers that be were testing the same thing. With many private firms on the forefront of making regular trips to space, with regular people on board. Its important to find out if certian things are safe.
