William Picard is the long lost son of Admiral Jean Luc Picard, former Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-D).
Picard has his father's leadership ability and calm under duress, but also has a maverick streak. He cites Captain William Riker, his namesake, as his idol and has studied the career of legendary Federation Captain James Kirk.
Picard has patterned his career after Kirk's and was excitedly assigned to the ship that bears the name of his idol.
Despite only being a ensign, Picard was forced to take command of the U.S.S. Kirk, NCC-93255 after a battle with the Borg wiped out the ship's senior officers. He remained the commanding officer of the Kirk as a newly promoted Lt. until he was relieved and re-assigned to his 2nd command was the U.S.S. Voltron, NCC-93221 at the rank of Lt. Commander.
He quickly became Starfleet's go to guy for Captain-less ships. As a Commander, he was moved to his third command, the U.S.S. Annuna, NCC-93648, after the Captain of that vessel had taken ill. Starfleet then deemed that Science vessels like the Annuna are no use in a multiple front war. He was reassigned to take his fourth command of the U.S.S. Orion, NCC-93415.
On Stardate 88712.80 he was finally promoted to the rank of Captain. He has taken command of the Galaxy class Exploration Cruiser, which he christened, the U.S.S. Stargazer (NCC 93140) after the ship of the first command of his father.
The opportunity to christen the name of this new vessel was one not afforded to many young Captains in the Federation.
