Dr. Galen Aldric is brilliant, creative, and relentless when faced with adversity or any threat to his fellow crew-mates, but he can also be rebellious and lax if not adequately challenged. Following the separation of his parents and his removal from Earth at the age of 14, he has had a very successful academic career.

In 2405, while serving as a consultant aboard a private survey vessel, the SS Monroe, he was involved in an incident with Orion pirates that nearly resulted in the destruction of both the Monroe and the responding Starfleet patrol ship, the USS Fitzgerald. His decisive action saved both crews and proved to be a pivotal event in his decision to join Starfleet.

Recalling his father's tales of the Dominion War, and the gallant action of Firefly Fleet, he specifically requested posting near the Badlands and Serenity Station.
